DFS Failure - user profile path and folder redirection changed - all files lost

Last week our DFS namespace stopped working. When I opened DFS management the namespace was not accessible. I did not find any entries in the event log that point to the problem.

I found this error in the event log but it has existed for quite a while before this problem.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on the Shadow Copy Provider {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}. Routine returned E_INVALIDARG. Routine details GetSnapshot({00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000},00359B28).

The DFS namespace points to the physical server at \\data-server\files.

We redirect our user folders to \\company.lan\files\data\%username%,etc using GP. The users profile path in AD points to \\company.lan\files\profiles\%username%.

When this problem began, I immediately fired up a stored VM image from a few days prior, then tried one that...

New Server Question...

Looking at buying a new server.  I have many quotes and am trying to decide if SSD is worth the added expense.

I am told that I should order the server with no drives or the minimum required to handle the OS and that I can get the drives cheaper and install them myself???

Looking at a RAID 5 array with 3 drives.  However, I am not a server specialist and from everything I have read, this could be a major undertaking and could lead to more problems than just saving a buck.  I have heard matching drives to the server is not easy?

Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you...

WDS Capture Image - winload.exe corrupt or missing

$

Seemingly out of the blue our WDS server has developed a very annoying issue with a capture image that up until today was working perfectly previously. What we are now experiencing when we network boot and then select the "Capture" boot image is an error that states:

"Windows failed to start. A recent software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:"

It then lists three items spanning from "Insert you windows disc and restart your computer" to "Click repair your computer" The main thing of note here is that it states "File \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe status 0xc000000f The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors."

I've tried created a brand new capture image (several of them actually) and all of them produce the same results. Does anyone have an incite into this...

Windows Server Backup causing: Eventid: 157 - disk n has been surprised removed

$

Every time we try and backup with Windows Server Backup on a 2012 R2 server to a 1Tb SATA disk it fails with:

  • Eventid: 157 - Disk n has been surprise removed.

Which is then followed by many:

  • Eventid: 153 - The IO operation at logical block address d90 for Disk 1 (PDO name: \Device\00000044) was retried.

We have tried enabling 'Disk' event logging but no events are written into the 'Disk' event log at all. How do we get events written into the disk log?

This disk is fine apart from this problem, full chkdsk /r runs with no problem and running a speed/verify test on it for 12 hrs runs fine so not a fault disk problem just something triggered by VSS.

Any ideas what we should do next to diagnose this further? This issue has now become quite urgent, this server should have gone into live production by now.

I have a Windows 2012 R2 server running remote desktop services (RDS).  I know how to do the goDaddy 2-step process using mmc/certificates and then import a certificate into RDS from the personal store, but I don't know how to generate the thumbprint.  Thanks in advance for you help!

I found this message on the Event Viewer of my Windows 2012 R2 Server today.  I have no second disk in this box.  I ran a chkdsk /f with no errors reported.

Has anyone else seen this message before?  If so, what is it trying to indicate?

I am building a new Print server based on Windows 2012 r2. The problem is that suddenly today i have noticed that all printers are gone in Print Management but they still exist in Devices and Printers. They are also visible in AD search and people can use them and add.

Any ideas how to fix the problem?

Hp Microserver gen8 or Hp ML10

Hi all!

I need to replace a HP microserver n40L due to its processor that is not powerful enough. I was looking at the Microserver Gen8 that seems a good choice, i found at the same price the ML10 and can't decide what is best for me. I run a multi-disk file server and some VMs (only one with RemoteFX), it's a very small environment.

Considering they costs about the same which do you think is the best solution?

Any suggestion from your experience?

Possible differences are the processor (Celeron G1610T or Pentium G2130), max ram (16GB microserver, 32GB ML10) and RAID controller (B120i microserver, B110i ML10).

Hi all,

I have a folder which I cannot delete, I am scratching my head - does anyone have any ideas? I feel like I have tried everything!

(Windows Server 2008 R2)

The folder is empty, like a ghost folder it has no permissions. When I try to change the security I get, "requested security information is unavailable" and has a red cross. When I try and delete folder in Windows, it says "could not find this item".

Things I have tried to delete it, were all to no avail.

*Delete, rename or move via normal windows GUI.
*DOS run as admin, dir /x and delete via old dos method rmdir "filename" /q /s.
*Tried changing the attib of the folder in DOS.
Create a folder with inheritance enabled and move the ghost folder into it to try and force inheritance.
Tried various file / folder delete tools such as File assassin, file unlocker, Killbox,Blizbank.

Automatically Delete Files older than X days

$

OK, I've been beating my head against the wall for a couple hours today trying to figure this out. I've seen a few possible solutions, but none of them have been a perfect fit - sorry for the long read but the criteria are somewhat exacting. I hope someone here will have a better idea.

I'm trying to come up with a way to automatically enforce our policy of deleting data from our FTP sites if it's older than 30 days. We're running Titan FTP onthe Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter OS. I first checked with Titan to see if they had a function to do this automatically. They don't, so I turned to a 3rd party.

Cyber-D Autodelete (http://cyber-d.blogspot.com/2005/10/cyber-ds-auto-delete-101.html)seemed to do everything we needed, but it only runs at system startup. This is a web server hosting web pages, so it rarely gets rebooted, so that...

Mac OS X dropping SMB connection

$

Hi,

I have a Macbook Air with OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 that is dropping connection to a Windows Server 2012 share. The thing is, in this same environment I have a Windows Server 2008 and I've made a test creating a folder and sharing it just for test purpose and my SMB connection on my Macbook didn't drop one single time. I've already tried using cifs, but that worked for some time and the problem came back again.

I've tried using an Active Directory login to connect to this share and that also worked just for some time.

I've also tried creating a file on the OS X to force SMBv1 connection and was no use. I think that this issue is related to Windows Server 2012, because this doesn't happen if I connect to a shared folder in 2008 server, but I'm not sure because I made a test with another macbook and a Windows computer and they work fine. At...

DHCP Merge

Here is the situation.  We have two DHCP servers on our network.  Both servers have identical scopes for the same subnets.  We would like to migrate them to Windows Server 2012. Then configure failover to provide redundancy.

Current

Scope name: Building 1

DHCP1: 10.X.1.X Range

DHCP2: 10.X.2.X  Range

We are using a 16-bit mask on the subnet.

Goal

Scope: Building 1

DHCP Range 10.X.1.X through DHCP2

Failover Partner of DHCP2.

Has anyone done something similar?  (names have been changed for security)

Thanks,

Aaron

Windows 2012R2 Data Center License Question

Hola Muchachos,

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Data Center license.

I know I can run an unlimited number of VMs with the license on 2 physical CPUS.

My main question is, can I reuse the Data Center license on a VM or will it be flagged.

Windows Server 2012 - Cannot Update Undoing Changes

$

I guess this is a two part question.

A couple of months back my Windows server 2012 failed during windows update. I let it slide for a while because I didn't want to stop the applications and services running. Now I have 39 pending updates that I want to install but I can't because I get the message "we couldn't complete the update Undoing changes."

does anyone have any insight as to how I can individually install the updates manually so my server can be up-to-date?

Also I've just tried to restart and complete the updates and now my Windows server 2012 has been "getting windows ready" for the past 3 hours.

I don't know if it's busy undoing changes, or successfully applying the updates, or if the system is just hung. It's strange because from the other computers on the network, tthe shared folders are visible yet Windows server 2012 is not...

CBS log and CBS persist in %Windir%\logs\CBS

$

I have 3 or 4 Windows 2008 R2 servers that keep running out of hard drive space, and then I have to keep appending and so on

So, today I looked a little more in detail and I found most of my space (76.1GB) is used by the folder C:\windows\logs\cbs which has CBS.log and CbsPersist_Dateandtime.log and some cab files.

I have some persist files over 9GB, actually the top ten files use 62GB together.

I did some search, but it seems weird that mainly 2008R2 seem to have this problem.

For a while I though the updates were the cause, but most of the searches show CBS as a sfc result (and I haven't run SFC manually, and the servers only restart when there is windows updates)

Any idea what this folder is really for, and why it gets so big in the 2008R2 servers? While we are at it, maybe we can find a solution too :p
