I assumed redirecting folders would allow me to protect users from themselves by backing up all of their documents when I back up the server. I have a user with a link on their desktop to a file that should be located on the server, but the shortcut is broken. As the administrator, how can I search their redirected folders without taking possession of the folders and without breaking the redirect? And if I'm using the SBS 2008 backup to an external drive, can I find that file and restore it for the user? I haven't had any trouble with the backups or restoring files, but the permissions on the redirected folders are so tight and the redirection so temperamental that I'm afraid to touch anything, which totally defeats the purpose of redirecting at all.
Is there any way I can help this user, at least hypothetically? He says he hasn't used the file since December, so I'm thinking I probably don't have a copy anyway. But in practice, how would I do this?
